Shanay Smith-Antenucci, Certified LeBarre and Cize Live Instructor
“All that is important is this one moment in movement. Make the moment important, vital, and worth living. Do not let it slip away unnoticed and unused.” ~Martha Graham
As a native of Queens, NYC, I was exposed to a vast array of culture and music. As the daughter of a Motown, R & B, and Disco lover, I learned to move and groove at an early age. These experiences created one commonality between two things I hold dear: my love for music and my love for dance.
The power of movement is so impacting. I am not just talking about dance or fitness, but how incredible our bodies are at adapting to any challenge. Whether it is developing stamina, strength, or flexibility, if you invest the time, you will find there is very little your body cannot accomplish.
With this in mind, I also understand how devastating it can be when your body is unable or incapable of moving in a desired way. In my early teens, I needed to have major back surgery to repair my scoliosis. A titanium rod was permanently affixed to my spine. For a long time, I was very limited in my physical capabilities. I became so insecure about my body that I refused to challenge myself. I was afraid to do anything that could potentially result in further injury.
Through the power of modern dance, I stumbled upon a new way to incorporate music and movement into my life. As a student learning techniques based on the teachings of Martha Graham, I found a passion where I could work within my own limitations, without judgment, and still feel good about myself. Although it was a short experience, I learned one of my greatest lessons in life: It is not beauty or grace that defines who you are…only you have that power.
Fast forward through time, and after a couple of major injuries and subsequent surgeries, I found myself in a fitness cul de sac. Weight gain and body image issues increased as the physical activity decreased from my life. It took some time, but I had to claim my life back and for me, home base is and shall always be music and movement – whether it is dance or some other form of fitness. I never met a fitness class I did not love! However, it was only after my exposure to an amazing program called LeBarre, coupled with some wonderful encouragement from a certain creator of the Body Déjà Vu Fitness format, did I push myself to become a fitness instructor.
Since that time, I became a certified instructor for the LeBarre (Lebert Training Systems) and Cize Live (Beachbody®) formats. This is not a coincidence. The LeBarre and Cize Live programs are purposefully designed to be suitable for all levels of participants and promise to foster an environment for you to be yourself. Exercise should be meaningful, fun, and influence your life in a positive way.
My love, passion, and privilege for teaching group fitness stems from witnessing class participants harness their personal inner strength to accomplish a variety of health and lifestyle goals. It may not always be easy, but I truly believe that with dedication and determination, you can do anything imaginable. All you need is faith in yourself.
We only get one life and you deserve an amazing one. Let go and put those fears behind you. Or better yet, let’s conquer those fears together. It is your time to shine!
See you in class!
